1. Best Overall – EltaMD UV Clear Face Sunscreen

- SPF: 46
- Skin Type: All; especially for sensitive skin
- Active Ingredients: Zinc oxide
- Volume: 1.7 fl oz. (48g)
- Scent: Unscented
Description
Get one of the best of the best sunscreen for vitiligo skin with the EltaMD UV Clear Face Sunscreen that is not only moisturizing but also provides great protection!
Features
Sheer sunscreen: absorbs fast and leaves you protected
Soothing cream: keeps your skin soothed and free from irritation
Oil-free: does not cause breakouts to occur on the face
How to use
Due to the lack of melanin in parts of the body, a person suffering from vitiligo is very susceptible to sun damage. That is why it is important to always be covered with sunscreen. Usually, you will need about 2 tablespoons of sunscreen for your whole body, 1 for the face, and 1 tablespoon for the rest of the body. So here is how you should apply the sunscreen.
- Wash and cleanse your face as thoroughly as possible
- Take about 1 tablespoon worth of sunscreen on your hand
- Apply it directly to your face, massaging it in an upward circular motion
- Cover your nose, cheeks, and eyelids and coat them as evenly as possible
- Next, cover the neck, chest, hands, and fingers
- After that, take another tablespoon of sunscreen to cover the legs and the rest of your body
- Wipe away any excess sunscreen from your hands and wait for about 15 minutes before heading out in the sun.
Remember to reapply the sunscreen every 2 hours after your first application to stay well-protected from the sun at all times!
Expert Verdict
Sometimes, a sunscreen is only a sunscreen that is able to only help with UV protection. Other times it is a lot more than just that. And the EltaMD UV Clear Face Sunscreen is a lot more than just sunscreen! People who suffer from vitiligo have very sensitive skin on lighter patches of skin. With this sunscreen, that is not a problem at all! This in fact helps to soothe any inflammation and helps to reduce the acne that might develop on the lighter parts of the skin, especially the face. It is also oil-free so you won’t have to worry about breakouts if you have oily skin either. The only thing I could criticize about the sunscreen is not being totally water-resistant (meaning it is not sweat-resistant either). However, the moisturizing effect and how easily it absorbs into the skin while also keeping you protected makes this my best overall product that will keep the thinner skin of the face very well-protected even on patches of lighter skin that you might suffer on the face due to vitiligo!
Pros and Cons
Pros | Cons |
Fast absorbing | Not water-resistant |
Keeps skin well-protected in lighter patches of skin
Moisturizing | |
Soothes and clears acne over time |

Expert Verdict
The worst that can happen to someone with vitiligo is to be exposed to UVB for too long. This causes sun damage which does even more harm to lighter patches of skin! Not to mention the UVA causing aging skin as well which will happen a lot quicker on vitiligo skin. That is what the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen Lotion is able to cover for you without harming your skin whatsoever! It is lightweight and non-comedogenic while also being very moisturizing too! The only thing I did not like about the sunscreen is that it wasn’t enough and left a white cast on my face afterward. I would say that is a small price to help keep your skin protected at all costs!

The allergenic oxybenzone in certain sunscreens is problematic, to say the least. But that is where the La Roche-Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch Sunscreen SPF 60 is great because it is oxybenzone-free and is great for sensitive skin! The sunscreen also works great with makeup over it due to the sheer coverage it provides. It also helps by providing moisturization for the skin and antioxidants that help to reduce the appearance of sun damage on your skin as well! Scent on sensitive skin like vitiligo can be harmful, which is why the Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen is great because of its scentless and weightless formula! What I find so fascinating about this product is how well it helps to actually be able to hold makeup on your face like a primer can! That means if you were to wear makeup you can use this as the primer base and keep your skin protected from sun damage! It is also very moisturizing for the face and keeps it well hydrated under the sun. While it only might be 40 minutes of water resistance, it is still better than nothing.

Remember to reapply the sunscreen every 2 hours after your first application or after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating to stay well-protected from the sun at all times!
Expert Verdict
Oil could be used on vitiligo skin but due to the comedogenicity of oil on the skin, especially sensitive skin, most oils are not used for vitiligo. Some sunscreen has a bit of oil in them to act as an emollient and be able to spread all over but it could cause breakouts on the skin. That is why the Aveeno Protect + Hydrate Moisturizing Face Sunscreen Lotion With Broad Spectrum SPF 60 is so great because it does all of that without the use of any oil in the ingredients. Not only that, but the prebiotic oats in the formula have moisturizing and antioxidation properties. This means that you help treat most sun damage on your skin with this sunscreen while also being protected as well. The only downside to the product is that is intended for the face and not the other parts of the body where it will leave a white cast because the skin is much thicker.
Pros and Cons
Pros | Cons |
Oil-free formula | Only for the face; leaves a white cast on the body |
Prebiotic oats for moisturization
Antioxidants for helping existing sun damage on the skin |
6. Best for All Type of Skin – Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF 50

- SPF: 50
- Skin Type: All
- Active Ingredients: Zinc oxide
- Volume: 0.32 oz. (9g)

Matte finish: available in 3 different matte shades
Versatile: can be used as lipstick or as a blush for makeup
Easy to carry: can be easily carried around with you
How to use
This is a balm type of sunscreen meant to be used as either lipstick or as a blush for your makeup. That is why the way that you will be using this product will be completely different from all the other sunscreens on the list. For your lips, make sure to start with the upper, then lower lips, and then rub them together. As a blush, you will want to dot your cheeks and then blend it in with your fingers. If you want a sheer finish, just press the balm on the skin and then blend it in. If you want to use it to get more of a shimmery finish, you will need to apply it directly by gliding it all over your lips starting from the middle. For the cheeks, you can glide the balm across and then later blend it in.
Remember to reapply the sunscreen every 2 hours after your first application stay well-protected from the sun as the effectiveness of the sunscreen will wear out by then!
Expert Verdict
This is one of those unique types of sunscreen because it is more of a balm-type makeup sunscreen. The Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF 50 can be either used as a lipstick or to add blush to your makeup! As a sunscreen, it does really well, blending in well with your skin, and is suitable for all skin types so you wouldn’t face much problem with using it on your vitiligo skin. It is also lip safe, which is especially good if you have lighter patches of skin in and around your lips. However, it is meant to be used for the face only and not the body because of how little there is to the product.
Pros and Cons
Pros | Cons |
Lip safe | Not for the body |
Suitable for all skin types; even for vitiligo
Versatile makeup sunscreen |

Expert Verdict
I tend to stay away from spray sunscreen because I don’t like how most of them smells or affected my sensitive skin. But the Sun Bum Sunscreen Spray Original SPF 50 has a lovely coconut smell that does not smell artificial at all! This is because it is made using vegan ingredients meaning that it is also hypoallergenic and does not irritate sensitive skin, which is especially good for sensitive skin people with vitiligo. It also has antioxidants in the form of vitamin E which is good to help your skin prevent sun damage on the skin. It is very easy to use but also quickly finishes as it is a spray. I would recommend using it as a sunscreen touch-up every few hours to help keep it going for longer instead of as the primary sunscreen because it is easy to use.

Expert Verdict
The ACM Depiwhite M Cream – Protective Cream is one of those products that you might not have heard about but I can assure you that it is probably better than a lot of the other sunscreens on the market! This is because they use chemical sunscreens that are more photostable than the ones available on the market but FDA’s impossible regulation makes it a hard-to-come-by product. But the sunscreen is really very good and lasts a long time as well! It is also a great spot reliever for sun spots and other sun damage-related issues on your face. Coming from this dermatologist, every dermatologist would be recommending this as it is already pretty popular outside the States and works well on sensitive skin which is a plus point for those with vitiligo.

Understanding Vitiligo: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options
Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease, which is where the body treats specific cells in the body as foreign substances and attacks them, thereby destroying them in the process. In the case of vitiligo, the cell that is attacked is the melanocyte cells, the one that is responsible for the production of melanin. Someone with vitiligo might not start out with patches of skin as it takes time for the melanocytes to be destroyed.
The cause of vitiligo is unknown but most doctors attribute it to many different things such as genetics and family history, stress, diet, sunburns, and a whole host of other causes that might not be related to the skin. Nevertheless, vitiligo takes time to show symptoms as the body tries to destroy the melanin-producing cells. It will start with discoloration on certain parts of the body such as the hands, face, feet, etc., and then slowly go to larger parts.
Unfortunately, there are no treatment options that can completely get rid of vitiligo. Some people have said that light therapy helps restore skin color while others suggest taking medication and a proper diet can help to restore skin color over time. However, there are no absolute solutions to it.
Factors to Consider When Choosing the Best Sunscreen for Vitiligo
For sunscreen, there are some things that you can consider for vitiligo. First and foremost, it is most important to have sunscreen because the lack of melanin makes the skin prone to sun damage like sunburns, dark spots, and even skin cancer! So choosing a good sunscreen with SPF 30 to 50 is important to keep the skin protected. Along with that, make sure that the sunscreen has broad-spectrum protection so you are protected from both UVA and UVB rays.
The other thing that you need to worry about is sensitive skin. Due to the immune system attacking specific parts of the body, the skin is left sensitive. This means that certain ingredients might cause breakouts, especially on the face. So you should look out for hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic sunscreen.
While I would advise against it, having a tinted sunscreen can help cover the discoloration if your tint matches your skin tone. However, tinted sunscreen is not really good for sensitive skin which is why I don’t really want to recommend picking one. But if you want, you can always consider one for your vitiligo skin.

Tips for Applying Sunscreen for Maximum Effectiveness
Applying sunscreen is always important. While most people rub sunscreen all over the body, here are some tips that you can use to maximize the effectiveness of sunscreen!
- Ask someone to apply sunscreen on your back
- Remember to cover your fingers and toes
- Don’t put sunscreen on the soles of your feet or the palm of your hands
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours
- If you went swimming, reapply sunscreen after drying off with a towel
- If you are sweating, make sure to pat dry the sweat and then reapply the sunscreen if it is not water-resistant
- Always wait 15 minutes before heading out in the sun; that is how long it takes for the ingredients to start working on your skin as sunscreen
- Remember to put some sunscreen on your lips as well
- Pat the sunscreen around the eyes so you don’t accidentally get it into your eyes
- Apply as much as possible!
Along with that, make sure to wear sunglasses and a sunhat to keep your eyes and scalp protected. And remember, your clothes don’t completely block out UV rays so you are still at risk of tanning underneath your clothes.
FAQs
1. Why is it important for people with vitiligo to wear sunscreen?
Sunscreens that have zinc oxide and a non-greasy formula are the best sunscreen for redheads.
2. What should I look for in sunscreen for vitiligo?
For sunscreen, SPF 30 to 50, broad spectrum protection, non-comedogenic, and water-resistance are things to look out for sunscreen for vitiligo. You could also go for tinted sunscreen that matches your skin color to help hide the discoloration of your skin.
3. How often should I reapply sunscreen?
You should reapply sunscreen every 1.5 hours to 2 hours after your first application. This is because sunscreen effectiveness is considerably reduced after about 90 minutes of having it on.
4. Are mineral-based sunscreens better for people with vitiligo?
Mineral-based sunscreens like zinc oxide are better for vitiligo as they don’t react with the skin and are really good at blocking out UV rays. Titanium dioxide has the problem of causing a white cast to be left on the skin when using it due to it being a colorant.
5. Can I use a tinted sunscreen to help even out my skin tone?
Tinted sunscreen is very good to help even out skin tone. But remember, as colorants are used, they might be comedogenic and cause breakouts because your pores get clogged.
